Why develop a plan?

"Without reflection, it is possible to teach a single year 30 times over.  Reflection—thinking about what we do before, during, and after our actions—is our cognitive guide for growth and development, a way of thinking that we should engage in continuously."

Linda Lambert, Leadership Capacity for Lasting School Improvement, 2003

A plan is not a guarantee for success but it will help assure that your inquiry study will be meaningful and lead to classroom practices that are more effective for you as a "person who engages in teaching" and for your students as "people who engage in learning."

It is time to lay out all the pieces of work you've done so far and see what direction they take you. You will find a Draft Inquiry Plan Worksheet in the resource section of this step. You will need one printed copy or you may wish to create and work on an electronic copy. The directions for completing your Draft Inquiry Plan Worksheet are in the activities section.

You have one other important goal to plan in this step. How will you capture what you think, see and hear as you investigate your question? Your observations and reflections will be the mainstay of your inquiry study. Every other collection of information will either confirm or challenge your observations. Ideas for keeping an Observation & Reflection Log are included in the activities section of this step.

Your Draft Inquiry Plan Worksheet will be your first entry in your Observation & Reflection Log.

Congratulations, you have formally begun your inquiry study with this first entry.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Now is the time for your learning community to set two future dates. One is a check-in date to collaborate and share initial findings and the other is the completion date for all inquiry studies. Allow several months to gather information and complete the inquiry projects. A time to check-in to collaborate just before or at the halfway point is ideal.
